We’ve all heard it. A well-meaning friend, a coach, or maybe a swimming teacher has said: “You’ve just got to get out of your comfort zone and go for it.”
Sounds inspiring, doesn’t it?
The problem isβ¦ when it comes to overcoming a fear of water, it’s actually some of the worst advice you can follow.
Your Comfort Zone Is Like a Balloon
Imagine you’re sitting inside an inflated balloon. That balloon is your comfort zone.
The walls of that balloon aren’t bad or wrong, they’re there to keep you feeling safe. The aim is not to burst out of it by forcing yourself into situations that terrify you.
Because here’s what happens when you have a fear of water and you push too far, too fast:
π₯ The balloon pops
π₯ Panic kicks in
π₯ Your brain gets the message: “The water isn’t safe – stay away”
That one bad experience can set you back further than before you started.
How to Expand Your Comfort Zone Without Popping It
Instead of trying to “escape” your comfort zone, you want to gently stretch it.
Here’s how:
β’ Take small, carefully chosen steps that feel challenging but not overwhelming
β’ Repeat those steps until they start to feel comfortable
β’ Then, gently stretch again
Do this consistently and those small steps soon become your new normal β and they stay that way.
This is how your comfort zone grows without triggering panic. This is how your brain learns: The water is safe for me now.
Why This Works to Overcome Fear in the Water β and Works Quickly
When you move slowly, carefully, and gently, you’re teaching your brain safety step by step. There’s no jolt, no shock, no fight-or-flight response.
Your nervous system stays calm, which means you can actually absorb the positive experience instead of just surviving it.
That’s exactly why my method works so well. We don’t push through fear. We remove the fear β and once it’s gone, progress happens naturally.
In fact, my clients are often surprised by how quickly things change when we do it this way. Without panic blocking their progress, they can focus on actually enjoying the water.
Your Next Step
If you’ve been told to “just go for it” and it’s left you feeling frustrated, embarrassed, or even more nervous than before, it’s not your fault.
You’ve simply been given the wrong approach. The right one works with your brain, not against it.
That’s exactly what we do in my 5-Day From Fear to Freedom in the Water Challenge. Just 10 minutes a day, at home, and you’ll finally understand why panic happens – and how to stop it for good.
